Growth Energy leadership delivered an end-of-year update to a group of members in Kansas City last week during its most recent regional meeting (held in conjunction with the NAFB Trade Talk). Attendees heard from CEO Emily Skor about ethanol's banner year in 2022, and got insights and previews of what's to come in 2023 from the rest of the Growth Energy senior management team. After the presentation there was time for a lively discussion about what to expect from the next Congress followed by dinner at Boulevard Brewing Company, catered by the world-famous Joe's Kansas City BBQ. Check out photos of the event here.

Glacial Lakes Energy Hosts ClearFlame COO to Promote Diesel-to-Ethanol Conversion for Heavy Duty Equipment
|
This week, Kirk Roller, COO of ClearFlame Technologies, visited Growth Energy member Glacial Lakes Energy in Watertown, SD. Roller's company modifies traditional diesel-style compression engines so that they can run on a wide range of clean, renewable, liquid fuels like the 360+ million gallons of ethanol that Glacial Lakes produces each year.
Roller was there to discuss the potential of diesel-to-ethanol conversion for heavy duty equipment and the impact it could have on companies, investors, and workers. While in Watertown he addressed a group of nearly two hundred diesel and automotive mechanic students, over two hundred investors and supporters of Glacial Lakes, and a group of local mechanics. Converting heavy duty equipment to run on ethanol instead of diesel, Roller noted, would present a significant growth opportunity for the ethanol industry.

Hundreds of Growth Energy Retail Partners Submit HBIIP Grant Applications |
Growth Energy helped hundreds of retailers submit their applications for grants under the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP) ahead of the deadline (Nov. 21) this week. The forthcoming millions of dollars in grant money will help finance facility improvements at these retail locations that allow them to store and sell ethanol-blended fuels like E15. This latest batch of Growth Energy-supported applicants includes one retail store that will be the first-ever to offer drivers access to gasoline blended with E15 in New York state. For more retailer resources, visit Growth Energy's retailer hub.

Ethanol, Petroleum and Ag Groups Express Support for Year-Round E15 Legislation |
Growth Energy joined a number of energy and agriculture organizations this week when we called on Congress to quickly adopt legislation that resolve inconsistent fuel volatility regulations--most notably by putting blends like E15 on the same regulatory footing as other gasoline blends, thereby removing the restrictions that keep E15 from being sold year-round. The letter, signed by Growth Energy and 11 other organizations, urged Senate Leaders Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to adopt legislation that would result in equal regulatory treatment for all gasoline blends containing 10 percent ethanol (E10) or more, including gasoline with 15 percent ethanol (E15).

EIA Data Shows U.S. Hit New Ethanol-Blending Record This Summer |
Data released by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) last week demonstrated what many of us might've already known--the summer of 2022 was a record-setting year for ethanol fuel blends. Following the Biden Administration's waiver that allowed E15 to be sold year-round the amount of ethanol being blended into other fuels spiked; EIA noted that for the season the total ethanol blending rate was 10.5%, the highest rate on record. The data also led EIA to revise its forecast upward for ethanol blending measured for the whole year; the agency now expects the final total to be 10.4%, another annual record in ethanol blending. DeWine Prioritizes Savings at the Pump in Ohio |
On the Growth Energy blog this week, we called attention to the leadership of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, one of a number of Midwest governors who has formally petitioned the EPA to establish parity between E10 and E15 fuels in Ohio through Section 211(h)(5) of the Clean Air Act. Until Congress acts at the federal level to allow the sale of E15 year-round, Growth Energy will continue to promote state efforts like DeWine's that lower costs for consumers, lower carbon emissions, and reduce our nation's dependence on foreign oil. Update on Rail-Labor Dispute |
Two more rail unions--BLET and SMART-TD--recently announced the results of their ratification votes, with BLET approving the contract and SMART-TD narrowly rejecting it. The National Railway Labor Conference and the Association of American Railroads have issued responses to the votes.
With these new votes, four of the rail unions have rejected the contract. The "cooling off" period established to facilitate negotiations and put off a strike is set to expire at midnight on December 8, setting up a potential strike as early as December 9.
There will be considerable continued outreach to Congress to urge them to step in to either extend the cooling off period or implement the recommendations of the Presidential Emergency Board. As always, we will continue to keep you updated. |

We Want to Hear Your Carbon Capture Stories |
Our industry leads the way on innovation and currently plays a crucial role in capturing carbon. Industries across the nation, including food and beverage companies, have been facing a carbon dioxide shortage—according to the Wall Street Journal, supplies of carbon dioxide have been tight since early 2020 when ethanol demand was at a historic low.
Bioprocessing facilities have a big role to play in bridging this carbon gap and we want to follow-up on this story to showcase how integral our industry is to this market. If your facility is capturing CO2 for dry ice or beverage carbonation, we want to share your story and make sure it and the benefits of carbon capture are highlighted in national media. Please email Director of Communications and Media Relations Jake Barron to learn more.
