Read Growth Energy's Comments on the EPA's Set Proposal |
After many late nights and weeks of consulting with our membership, the Growth Energy team submitted its comprehensive comments last week to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on its Renewable Volume Obligation (RVO) proposal under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) (also known as "the Set"). Included in the comments are two new studies we commissioned that dive deeply into the science to show that, contrary to the complaints of the oil industry and other perennial biofuel critics, biofuels are a key tool in mitigating pollution, ethanol production has a much more negligible impact on land use change than previous research has claimed, and there is no proven link between the RFS and significant adverse effects to listed endangered species and their critical habitats. Read the announcement here and the full comments here.

Last week, domestic ethanol demand was 12.9 BGY, down 1.8% compared to a week ago. The EIA-reported gas demand was down 1.8% from last week, at 126.8 BGY. The 4-week average ethanol and gas demand are 13.0 and 127.8 BGY.
Ethanol production was 15.5 BGY last week, up 1.4% versus the week before, and 0.1% less than the 4-week average in 2019. Midwest production was up 1.4% (+3.8 MG) versus a week ago, and average production in the other regions was up 2.1% (+0.3 MG). Capacity utilization of plants online was 89.6% overall, 91.1% in the Midwest, and 67.4% on average, elsewhere, excluding 1,355 MGY of capacity shutdown at 27 ethanol plants for other than maintenance. On an installed capacity basis, utilization was 84.2% overall, 89.1% in the Midwest and 40.7% in the other regions.
Exports were an estimated 27.5 MG last week based on 110 MG of exports forecast for February. The EIA reported no ethanol imports last week.
Overall inventory was up 19.0 MG last week. EIA-counted stocks increased 39.4 MG, and regional changes were: East (-2 MG), Gulf (+37 MG) and West (+5 MG) Coasts and the Midwest (-1 MG). In-transit inventory decreased 20.5 MG.
Based on the total inventory of 1,920 MG on February 10th and the 4-week avg. domestic demand, there were 53.2 days of supply, up 0.1 days versus a week ago. Including the 4-week avg. of net exports, there were 48.0 days of supply, up 0.1 days versus a week ago. |

Carbon Capture 101: Growth Energy's New Video Simplifies CCUS |
Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is an innovative, increasingly popular way that bioprocessing facilities are lowering their overall carbon footprint. Talking about how this technology works and how it benefits the planet, however, can get complicated in a hurry. That's why Growth Energy created a short, simplified video, aptly titled Carbon Capture 101, to make it easier for its members to share their CCUS story with consumers and other stakeholders. The video (and its accompanying blog post) help explain the ins and outs of CCUS in a way that anyone can understand. Check it out here and be sure to share it on your own social media channels!

Growth Energy Cheers Bipartisan Call for EPA Action on Midwest E15 |
Growth Energy praised a letter from 31 House and Senate lawmakers to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calling for long-overdue action on a petition from Midwest governors that would preserve access to lower-cost E15 prior to the start of the summer driving season. We’re grateful to our bipartisan champions in Congress for calling upon EPA to act swiftly to protect cleaner, more affordable fuel options at the pump for working families. American drivers saved an average of 16 cents per gallon this past summer thanks to E15, and no one wants to see those options vanish from the marketplace on June 1.” Read more here.

Send Us Photos of E15 Cost Savings in Your Area |

As we continue to make our argument for year-round E15 on Capitol Hill and in state legislatures around the country, we've found that a picture is really worth a thousand words. If you see an example of significant cost savings at a fuel station near you, take a picture (like the ones above) and share it with us! We'll put your photos to good use telling the story of how E15 saves drivers money. Email them to kwebster@growthenergy.org.

Nebraska Considers Year-Round E15
|
The Nebraska Legislature is considering new legislation that would require the sale of E15 statewide by 2027. Nebraska produces the second-most ethanol of any state in the U.S. but has one of the lowest blend rates in the country (under 10%). Approval of the legislation would mean $55M in consumer savings, grow demand for Nebraska corn by 14.5M bushels, and support more than 3000 jobs. Growth Energy strongly supports the legislation that follows the example set by Iowa’s E15 standard last year, and we are working with our team on the ground and other stakeholders in the state to get the bill approved. Learn more about the bill and how you can help support the effort here.
