California Cap-and-Trade Program Update |
|
|
This week, Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Chris Bliley submitted comments to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) on potential changes to CARB’s Cap-and-Trade program. In his remarks, Bliley highlighted bioethanol’s leading role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the state and generating credits under California’s low carbon fuel standard, and how maintaining bioethanol’s exemption from cap-and-trade will allow our industry to continue leading in GHG reductions. Bliley's remarks also dispelled several myths and unfounded concerns over land use change and the impact ethanol production has on food costs and emphasized ethanol’s continued movement toward net zero as “readily available technologies such as carbon sequestration and climate-smart agriculture practices” are employed. You can read Growth Energy’s submission here. |

Washington Update: A New House Speaker |
The search for a Republican Speaker of the House is over. Yesterday, the full House voted to elect Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana as Speaker of the House by a vote of 220-209. Rep. Johnson was elected to represent the fourth district of Louisiana in 2016. In January 2021, he was elected by his colleagues to serve as Vice Chairman of the House Republican Conference, one of the seven elected leadership positions for Republicans in the U.S. House. He has also previously served as the chairman of the Republican Study Committee.
As a Louisianan, Rep. Johnson has received more campaign money from the oil and gas industry over the course of his congressional career than any other industry. Our team looks forward to engaging with his offices and educating him on the benefits of biofuels. |
Help Growth Energy Educate Lawmakers about Biofuels Co-Products - Share Your Story |
We had a fantastic Growth Energy Biofuels Summit this year, and while we were on the Hill we found that a number of lawmakers had questions about co-products--What are they? How do they fit into the biofuel production process? Why are they important?
Whether it's animal feed, food-grade CO2, bioplastics, or anything else, we want to hear about what unique and value-added co-products (beyond biofuels) that you're involved in manufacturing. Every story you share helps us educate lawmakers about all of the innovative things that are happening in the plant and on the farm, and further demonstrates our industry's pivotal role in cultivating the bioeconomy. To share your story, contact Holly Cullen. |

Biden Administration Designates 31 Tech Hubs |
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) announced the designation of 31 Tech Hubs in regions across the country this week. This is the first phase of the new Tech Hubs program, which is an economic development initiative designed to drive regional innovation and job creation by strengthening a region’s capacity to manufacture, commercialize, and deploy technology that will advance American competitiveness. The program invests directly in burgeoning, high-potential U.S. regions and aims to transform them into globally competitive innovation centers.
One notable Tech Hub designee is the Illinois Fermentation and Agriculture Biomanufacturing (iFAB) Tech Hub, led by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This project seeks to scale precision fermentation to convert underutilized corn feedstocks into high-value, customized alternative proteins, food ingredients, materials, chemicals, and more. Read more about this Tech Hub here.

National Corn Growers Association's Consider Corn Challenge Winners |
At last week's Advanced Bioeconomy Leadership 2023 Conference in San Francisco, Calif., the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) announced the winners of the Consider Corn Challenge IV. Four winners were chosen, with each submission offering a unique way to improve a product or process using feed corn to produce biobased materials.
“The Consider Corn Challenge fosters innovative collaborations between corn farmers and industry, which paves the way for new products, chemicals and applications. This year’s winners have continued to demonstrate corn’s adaptability,” said NCGA’s Director of Market Development Sarah McKay. “And corn’s unique versatility can be witnessed in the showcase of their diverse approaches and applications. This contest continues to highlight the fact that U.S. corn is an extremely flexible feedstock suited for biobased products.”
The four winners for the Consider Corn Challenge IV are Bluestem Biosciences Inc., based out of Omaha, Neb.; Pennsylvania State University, located in the state’s University City; Nexceris, headquartered in Lewis Center, Ohio; and Maizly, whose U.S. office is located in Phoenix, Ariz.

Phibro Ethanol Partners with Ingenza on Bioethanol Innovation |
Growth Energy associate member Phibro Ethanol has announced its joint partnership with Ingenza, to engineer a novel yeast strain that will increase yield in the commercial production of bioethanol.
This latest innovation – arising from a productive and long-standing partnership between the two companies – will help to make this valuable natural resource more widely available for processing into sustainable fuels across a range of industries.
The successful partnership between Ingenza and Phibro sought to solve this issue and led to the introduction of KinetX® yeast solutions – a highly thermotolerant yeast strain that secretes glucoamylase (GA) throughout growth and fermentation stages – into the market. The novel strain was obtained using Ingenza’s proprietary strain construction and adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) platforms. It offers superior robustness and reliability at higher temperatures while greatly reducing GA addition in comparison to traditional yeasts, bringing significant financial benefits to bioethanol producers. Additional next generation yeast lines in the KinetX portfolio will shortly debut on the international market alongside other programs incorporating other novel technologies to deliver even higher bioethanol yields.
