NEW AD HAILS PRESIDENT TRUMP’S REJECTION OF REFINER ATTACKS ON BIOFUELS

Image

Growth Energy is a proud member of Fuels America, a diverse coalition that represents voices across the country, from farmers to scientists, who work to ensure that America continues to lead the world in the development and production of biofuels. This week, Fuels America launched a new television ad recognizing President Trump’s steadfast support for rural communities, farmers, and workers in the biofuel sector. The ad responds directly to oil industry attacks on the president for his long-standing commitment to growth under the federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

Emily Skor, Growth Energy’s CEO, said about the ad: “Refining executives seem to think that attacking the president will undermine his support for rural jobs and homegrown fuels, but he’s consistently sided with voters across the heartland. There are over 200 biorefineries across the nation, each serving as a key manufacturing hub, supporting jobs and creating vital markets for countless farmers. This industry is creating low-cost energy right here in America, and those communities deeply appreciate the president’s commitment to U.S. leadership on biofuels.”

The new ad, which is airing on Fox News through November 20, features footage of President Trump’s advocacy for homegrown fuels, noting that he “kept his promise, protecting farm and manufacturing jobs.” The ad urges viewers to thank the president for standing up to refiners who have attacked the White House for its support of clean, affordable fuel options for American drivers.

POET's 30th Anniversary

Image

POET is celebrating 30 years of biofuels production! In 1987, POET founder and CEO Jeff Broin and his family purchased a bankrupt plant in Scotland, S.D., that had never worked. Three decades later POET is the largest biofuels producer in the world as well as the largest company in South Dakota.

To celebrate, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard proclaimed last Thursday "POET Day" in the state. Thirty years have come and gone for Jeff Broin, but he still remembers the beginning: "We hired 13 people, rebuilt the facility which was already there and not operating. Started it up. We grew the company from there," Jeff said.

The company has grown significantly indeed, going from producing 1 million to 1.8 billion gallons of biofuels each year. "We produce 10 billion pounds of byproducts we ship throughout the world, [as well as] 550 million pounds of corn oil, a lot of which becomes biodiesel. So renewable fuels is a byproduct of renewable fuels. We think that's pretty unique," Jeff said. Read more about POET's 30th anniversary in articles from the South Dakota Argus Leader and KSFY-TV.

IN REGULATIONS

RVOs Deadline and EPA Guidance

The 2018 RFS Renewable Volume Obligations (RVOs) have been sent to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for final review before the final announcement, which is expected by November 30. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt has committed that the final volumes will be at least what were proposed in EPA’s July RVO proposal.

Additionally, last week the EPA updated their guidance for plants with efficient producer pathways to include cellulosic biofuel/D3 RIN generation from corn kernel fiber. The updated guidance document can be found here: https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2017-10/documents/420b17033.pdf

United Nations Framework for Climate Change COP 23 Meeting

Growth Energy's Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Chris Bliley will be going to the United Nations Climate meetings (COP 23) in Bonn, Germany, later this week to discuss the benefits of ethanol as they pertain to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to helping countries meet their own climate goals. Chris will also be appearing on a panel with Bart Pieper from Marquis Energy, Dr. Steffen Mueller from the University of Illinois-Chicago, and other European biofuels advocates. Follow along at the event's webcast or on Twitter @ethanolalliance!

Tax Reform Update

Last week, a proposal to reform the U.S. Tax Code was introduced in the House of Representatives. The House Ways and Means Committee started debating the proposed legislation on Monday. The president has asked for a bill on his desk by Christmas. Below are a few highlights of this proposal in the House:

  • Lowers the maximum tax rate for business pass-through entities to 25 percent
  • Lowers the corporate tax rate to 20 percent
  • Does not include an expansion of the master limited partnership (MLP) tax structure to include renewable fuels
  • Does not include extensions of biofuels tax incentives, like those for biodiesel and cellulosic biofuels

Growth Energy will continue to monitor changes to this proposal, and as the Senate debates and considers its own tax package. Stay tuned!

Getting to Know... Thorntons

Growth Energy is happy to partner with a number of market-leading retailers who sell E15 fuel. A new feature you'll see from time to time in the Weekly Rundown will be a profile of one of these retailers. Up first: Thorntons!

Thorntons currently offers Unleaded15 at 40 stores in the Chicagoland area and six stores in Indiana. There are 120 Thorntons locations that sell E85. A little history about the company: James H. Thornton, an industry entrepreneur in the independent branded retail fuel market during the 1950s, opened the first Thorntons location in Clarksville, Ind., in 1971 that featured a kiosk building and a full-service attendant. In the 1980s, Thorntons transitioned from kiosk locations to convenience stores and grew to over 100 locations. Since 2000, the company has focused on larger facilities in major metropolitan areas with expanded fast food and fresh food offerings in a clean environment and has also aggressively pursued alternative fuel projects in order to expand availability and fuel choice for consumers across markets. Today there are 190 Thorntons locations across six states.

According to Matt Nichols, Senior Manager of Strategic Initiatives at Thorntons, "Growth Energy has been a valuable partner as we have introduced Unleaded15 to the Chicagoland market. The organization does a great job of mining insights across their retailer base to help ease the process of offering new alternative fuel products, and has provided beneficial marketing support as we continue to develop the identity of Unleaded15. Growth Energy is also a strong voice in Washington and tirelessly works to resolve legislative issues that complicate offering higher ethanol blends. Growth Energy was recognized by Thorntons as their Fuel Marketing Partner of the Year in 2015."

Growth Energy's Communications Associate Austin Dabney attended the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas last week along with American Ethanol Performance Team members Anthony Taylor and Kyle Mohan. SEMA is the largest trade show in the world and regularly attracts over 70,000 attendees. This year's event provided an opportunity for Growth Energy to work directly with Anthony and Kyle to engage fellow SEMA attendees on the engine performance aspects of American Ethanol, since both drivers had cars on display at their respective booths, each with American Ethanol branding. Growth Energy also also used the week at SEMA to hold strategic planning sessions for at-track activations for both Anthony's and Kyle’s 2018 racing seasons, and brainstormed new content ideas including crossover opportunities between their two racing disciplines,
