WASHINGTON – Tom Buis, CEO of Growth Energy, today released the following statement regarding The Nature Conservancy’s study on the “energy sprawl” potential of biodiesel and ethanol production. Buis said advanced farming techniques mean the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) can be met without adding any new land to biofuel production.
“The USDA has estimated a record corn and soybean crop this year. The American farmer produces more than enough of both crops to meet the needs for food, feed and fuel, and still have ample supply to export. New technology and advanced farming techniques mean we’re producing more grain on fewer acres. And as those technologies continue to advance, our yields will only increase. One projection estimates that we will produce 300 bushels per acre on average by 2030, so we won’t have to add land to meet production capacity for the RFS.”
