EPA’s Forward-Looking Renewable Fuel Volumes for 2022 Ensure American Families Have Greater Access to Lower-Cost, Lower-Carbon Fuel at the Pump |
Last Friday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized its rulemaking under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which sets the 2022 Renewable Volume Obligations (RVO) for conventional biofuels at 15 billion gallons.
Why it matters: The 2022 RVO sets a baseline for strong future biofuel blending levels under the RFS, ensuring drivers have greater access to lower-cost, lower carbon fuel at the pump.
What Growth Energy thinks: CEO Emily Skor thanked President Biden and his EPA for setting the 2022 RVO at a level that will "deliver savings at the pump for working families, slash carbon emissions, and strengthen U.S. energy security by bringing more American renewable fuel into our fuel supply...By setting conventional implied 2022 RVO volumes at 15 billion gallons, coupled with restoring the first 250 million gallons that had been illegally waived in the 2016 RVO, EPA underscores the critical role biofuels play - and will continue to play - in mitigating climate change and lowering prices at the pump."
What's next: The 2022 RVO sends a positive signal as EPA works through its new rule - the "Set" - that picks up where Congress left off and establishes multi-year renewable fuel blending requirements for 2023 and beyond. |

WEEKLY ENERGY INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION DATA |
Last week, domestic ethanol demand was 14.3 BGY, up 2.5% compared to a week ago. The EIA-reported gas demand was up 2.5% from last week, at 141.0 BGY. The 4-week average ethanol and gas demand have been 14.0 and 138.0 BGY. Summer driving demand is evident even with record high gasoline pricing.
Ethanol stockpiles across the country rose ending a string of three weekly draws and leaving supply 16% higher than the same time last year. The build also included contribution from every region of the country, except the lightly supplied Rocky Mountains states. |

| Growth Energy Thanks Secretary Vilsack for Delivering on Biofuel Producer Assistance
|
Late last week, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack delivered on the Biofuel Producer Assistance program and provided direct relief to biofuel producers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why it matters: Biofuels producers were some of the hardest hit businesses by the pandemic. After a year of advocacy efforts by Growth Energy and industry partners, USDA announced in December 2021 the availability of $700 million in direct payments to biofuel producers adversely impacted by the pandemic. These funds were authorized through COVID-19 aid legislation which was signed into law in late 2020. What Growth Energy thinks: CEO Emily Skor thanked Secretary Vilsack for "seeing the Biofuel Producer Assistance program through from start to finish and ensuring biofuel producers receive the pandemic assistance they were promised at the height of the pandemic." |

On Sunday at the World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Ill., NASCAR and Growth Energy celebrated 20 million NASCAR miles driven on Sunoco Green E15. Why it matters: Since the start of the partnership in 2011, NASCAR has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent across NASCAR's three national touring series while also increasing horsepower on the race track.
What NASCAR said: "We’re fortunate to have great partners like Growth Energy and Get Bioethanol who are dedicated to NASCAR and helping us minimize our impact on the environment,” said Michelle Byron, Vice President of Partnership Marketing, NASCAR. “This weekend is a testament to Sunoco Green E15 and its ability to fuel world-class competition for more than a decade, all while reducing emissions in pursuit of a more sustainable sport.”
What Growth Energy said: "Mile after mile, E15 has also proven its ability to flawlessly perform in the most demanding driving environments, both on the track and for drivers across America," said CEO Emily Skor. "This weekend’s race and celebration was a reminder that filling up with E15 both on and off the track continues to be the smart choice for drivers who care about high performing engines, reducing emissions, and saving money at the pump.” Look for more photos and updates at GetBioethanol.com! |

IFF Announces Collaboration for Enhanced Training with PROtect LLC |
IFF's Health and Biosciences division has announced a collaboration with PROtect LLC to deliver enhanced training to producers in the ethanol industry under the XCELIS Ethanol Solutions platform.
PROtect works with a variety of industries throughout the U.S. and ensures companies are protected from unnecessary risks related to regulatory non-compliance, employee injury, liability, and property damage. The PROtect Operator Training Package has been the leading trianing system for ethanol producers for many year. Through this collaboration, IFF will add critical training around the use of enzymes and yeast through PROtect's program and improve the biotechnology expertise of ethanol producers.
"At IFF, we believe that as the ethanol production process becomes more complex, workforce training is paramount to future success. Our training materials will add to the operator experience in PROtect’s system and equip them with key understanding of the interdependencies of biotechnology in the plant and how their decisions will affect production outcomes,” said Samantha Dickens, IFF North America sales leader. |
POET Joins Navigator CO2 Pipeline Project |
Navigator CO2 announced today that they have signed a letter of intent to provide carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) services to POET. The agreement outlines Navigator's integrated CCUS services for approximately five million metric tons of POET's biogenic CO2 annually and establishes a collaborative path for the development of a central carbon offset marketplace and carbon use logistics platform. The system will phase in 18 of POET's bioprocessing facilities across Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota and is on schedule for operational in-service in 2025.
"We recognize that now is the time to take bold action to preserve our planet for future generations," said Jeff Broin, POET Founder and CEO. "POET has been a leader in low-carbon biofuels and CO2 capture for commercial use for decades, and this project is another significant step in utilizing bioprocessing to accelerate our path to net-zero. We choose our partners carefully, and we believe Navigator has the expertise to deliver long-term value to rural America by further positioning agricultural commodities as a viable source of low-carbon liquid fuels to power our future."
"This agreement is a testament to two industries coming together and using their resources to pave innovative pathways toward carbon neutrality and a more sustainable future. The breadth, scale, and technical acumen of each party's platform is unmatched," said Matt Vining, Chief Executive Officer of Navigator. "POET is an industry pioneer that has built a company on the pillars of safety, integrity, innovation, and being a good neighbor in the communities they call home, all of which align entirely with the culture and track record of Navigator. We look forward to this partnership with POET as we continue to fulfill our mission to provide sustainable carbon solutions to our communities, consumers, and customers."
