Statement on Ontario’s Proposed Biofuels Regulations

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor released the following statement in response to the government of Ontario’s announcement proposing changes to biofuels regulations, including increasing the current 5 percent ethanol mandate to 10 percent starting in 2020:

“If this proposal is finalized, it will be a win for Canadian consumers, the environment, the ag economy, and biofuel producers,” Skor said.

“Blending ethanol into fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 43 percent compared to conventional gasoline. We are breathing cleaner air every day thanks to our nation’s policy on renewable fuels. And we are pleased to see the government of Ontario take steps toward policies that would provide its citizens with the same benefits.”

In March, Growth Energy filed comments to Canada’s Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, focusing on the importance of including ethanol in the development of Ontario’s fuel standard. The comments underscored that the easiest way to reduce greenhouse gas and other harmful emissions is to increase ethanol blended gasoline at a minimum of 10 percent.
