President Trump Allows Year-round Sales of E15 in Announcement Tuesday

Image

This past Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced that he would allow the sale of E15 year-round before departing the White House for a rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The announcement has been long anticipated by our industry and we applaud the president for delivering on his promise to rural America. Nationwide adoption of E15 year-round sales could bring billions of gallons of new market demand to producers and billions of bushels of corn demand to our nation's farmers.

“We thank President Trump for delivering on his promise to rural America by lifting the summer restriction on E15 sales,” said Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor following the announcement. “He answered the call from American farmers by removing the single most important barrier to growth in higher biofuel blends. This announcement is great news for farmers, biofuel workers, retailers and consumers everywhere who want to enjoy cleaner, more affordable options at the fuel pump. This is a critical step toward giving American motorists higher-octane options at a lower cost all year long."

Additionally, we will continue working to make sure that an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) final rule crosses the finish line before the start of next year's summer driving season (June 1). As Growth Energy leads the industry in taking the first steps to ensure EPA follows through on the President's directive, we will keep you updated on important developments. Read more below on what next steps we will be taking to ensure that E15 year-round is enacted as soon as possible.

Learn more about the benefits of E15 year-round and send a thank you letter to your elected official at www.E15now.com.

Growth Energy Plans Next Steps for Securing Ruling on E15 Year-round

President Trump's announcement is a hard fought victory for our industry that has been in the works for years. However, we cannot revel idly and instead must stay vigilant in the coming days and months. There are a number of critical next steps that Growth Energy and our members must capitalize on if we want to secure year-round sales of E15 before the start of the next RVP season on June 1, 2019.

Over the next few weeks, we expect the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to release a proposed rule for enacting the president's directive for an E15 waiver. This waiver would extend the current Reid Vapor Pressure exemption to allow E15. Once the proposal is released , there will be a 30 to 45 day comment period, during which it is crucial that our industry make our voice heard and give EPA the tools to allow not only E15, but also higher blends like E25 and E30.

To this effect, Growth Energy will be working to file substantial and legal comments and we will be asking for everyone in the industry to contribute in support of this regulatory change. After the comment period closes, EPA will review the comments submitted and publish a final rule. We are pushing hard to ensure that the rule making process is completed by the June 1, 2019, deadline and the White House announced its intent to meet that deadline.

However, the fight will not end there. As deadlines approach we will keep you updated on our efforts and will provide tools to help you have your voice heard. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to a member of Growth Energy staff.

Mexico Energy Commission's Study Demonstrates Ethanol Emissions NOT More Harmful than MTBE

Image

Last week, the Mexican Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) and the Mexican Petroleum Institute (IMP) jointly released a study, conducted by IMP, refuting the claim that ethanol blended fuel gave off more emissions than fuel blended with MTBE. Mexico's CRE initially approved the blending of 10 percent ethanol (or E10) into their fuel supply to address environmental issues and keep prices for consumers low. However, their initial ruling did not approve the use of E10 in major metropolitan areas, until an analysis could be conducted on the impact of ethanol for smog.

"The Mexican market is eager for a cleaner, more affordable fuel and this is a big step in demonstrating that ethanol can supply those attributes to the Mexican fuel supply," said Growth Energy Senior Vice President of Global Markets Craig Willis. "The U.S. has long enjoyed the benefits of higher octane ethanol blends like E10 and we applaud the Mexican Government for remaining committed to ethanol as environmentally friendly, higher octane fuel alternative."

However, as the study clearly confirms, ethanol is a cleaner burning fuel alternative that does not contain the cancer causing chemical found in MTBE. And the study stands as an important step for Mexico in laying the requisite groundwork for approving a nation-wide 10 percent blend of ethanol.

The study can be found on the CRE's website, please note an English version is not yet available.

Growth Energy's Market Development team headed to Las Vegas for the National Association of Convenience Store Show (NACS) this week to promote E15 and E85 fuel to retails from around the country and globe. NACS is the largest convenience store event with more than 25,000 domestic and international attendees. At this event, our team works directly with retailers on offering E15 and E85 to consumers and improving the ethanol market outlook.

Growth Energy has been working hand-in-hand with fuel retailers for the past six years to bring E15 access to more and more American drivers. Working with 12 of the largest retail chains in the nation, these retailers have more than 10,000 stores and sell more than 15 percent of the total U.S. fuel supply. Growth Energy is committed to continuing to work with our retail partners to facilitate the adoption of E15 nationwide.

Green Plains Inc. President and CEO Todd Becker Sits Down With Bloomberg TV to Discuss E15

Image

Yesterday, President and CEO Todd Becker of Green Plains Inc., a Growth Energy member, sat down with David Westin on Bloomberg TV to discuss the benefits of ethanol following President Trump's announcement allowing year-round sales of E15. Becker discussed how antiquated regulations have held back E15 and higher blends of ethanol fuel from entering the market place year-round. He explained that overturning those regulations would provide consumers cleaner, more affordable fuel at the pump.

"We want this to be done, and the president wants this to be done, by the summer driving season," Becker explained. "We believe that the EPA can move very quickly to get this done over the next six or eight months."

Whitefox Technologies Joins Growth Energy and Installs 8th ICE System in SIRE Plant

Image

Established in 2000, Whitefox specializes in technology development and process integration based on its proprietary membrane solutions. Its efficient designs reduce energy and water consumption in ethanol and organic chemical manufacturing processes. Whitefox provides solutions for fuel ethanol, other biofuels, and industrial alcohol production in the U.S., Canada, Europe and South America.

Whitefox Technologies and SIRE (Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy) announced last month that they have reached an agreement [LINK] to install a Whitefox ICETM advanced membrane dehydration system at SIRE’s plant in Council, Bluffs Iowa. The system will be the 8th ICE solution installed by Whitefox in the U.S. and its second installation in Iowa.  It will greatly improve the SIRE’s carbon footprint.

“I have known Brian and others on the SIRE team for a number of years and it is extremely gratifying when a highly regarded ethanol producer such as SIRE chooses Whitefox’s membrane technology,” said Whitefox CEO Gillian Harrison. “SIRE is very focused on improving its operations, reducing its carbon footprint and adding value to the farm community in the Council Bluffs area.  We are pleased to be helping SIRE achieve its goals and look forward to a successful relationship.”

Whitefox’s Integrated Cartridge Efficiency (Whitefox ICETM) is a membrane-based dehydration technology with a small footprint. Whitefox ICE™ eliminates water-rich recycle streams to free up capacity in distillation and dehydration to enable producers to increase ethanol output and revenues as well as improve margins by reducing energy costs and improve carbon intensity (CI) scores, reduce cooling water costs year-round, and reduce operation & maintenance costs.  ICE™ can be integrated into existing corn ethanol production plants with minimal disruption. Specifically, it will enable SIRE to run at a 15 million gallon per year increased production rate and is designed for further expansion to achieve a run rate of greater than 160 million gallons a year.
